  1. 10' 5wt = Serious nymphing stick

Posted by Cheech on 6th May 2013

I got my new Xa 10' 5 wt out last week and all I can say is wow... That thing is a fine fishing tool! I have been messing with several nymphing techniques for the past few years, but this is my first real "nymph" specific rod. The action on it made for quick accurate casts, and I was able to feel the fish hit, set the hook, and play them in fast water. This rod is hard to beat for the price.

  2. 8 wt Serious Streamer Chucker

Posted by Landon on 22nd Apr 2013

This rod is powerful and accurate! It throws very large articulated streamers with no stress and has plenty reserve power left, even into the wind. If you need or want a single handed rod to handle some big fish this is it!

  3. 10ft 7wt Xa - Serious Steelheading Versatility

Posted by Andrew Steele Nisbet on 28th Mar 2013

Love this rod! I personally think the 10' 7wt Xa has a super versatile action and feel for the steelhead streams I fish here in Western New York. I find the Xa's more responsive action preforms exceptionally well when high sticking a indicator, shot and weighted fly; while its 10ft length offers up that extra reach for precise mends and line control without feeling tip heavy or leaving my forearm sore like my 11ft switch. Also, with little trial and error along with some awesome help from Evan (evan@allenflyfishing.com) I found a couple sinktip grain weight/length configurations matching the Xa's action much better than what I had been using and can now single hand spey large streamers nearly on par with my switch. So far, the 10ft 7wt Xa is the closest I've come to having the best of both worlds and at pretty bad ass price to boot. Currently fishing it with a #3 Allen Kraken which so far I am also very happy with.

  4. Great rod at a phenomenal price

Posted by Dan Cleary on 4th Sep 2012

Bought this rod for a recent trip down to the Gunnison River in Colorado. Had family coming to town and needed another 4 piece rod. I let my brother use my usual rod and I tried the new XA. It was stiffer than expected which was a great surprise. The quality seemed really good adn for the price, it beats the competition hands down. I have been fishing Allen reels for a couple of years, but this is my first rod. I wouldn't hesitate to get another.

  5. Feels like quality and casts great.

Posted by Dan Cleary on 19th Aug 2012

It's definitely a nice rod. It looks good and and casts great. Can't beat the price. We got it to accompany a Trout 5/7 bought a few years ago. Took it down the Gunnison the past 2 days and it reeled in the fish with ease.

    4.5 stars

  6. Superb rod for smallmouth bass

Posted by Mike in Frederick, MD on 12th Jul 2012

I want to start this review by thanking Justin and Evan for the time they allow for the customers. Most online companies I deal with do not respond as quickly as these guys. Anyway , I am an old spincaster when it comes to fishing for Smallmouth Bass. Let me rephrase that. I am an EX- spin caster. I bought a 9' 6w Xa and love it. This rod loads and casts like a dream. I use a 5/7 Allen reel spooled with Rio smallmouth line. This is a great combination for throwing poppers, streamers and cloisters. The rod has plenty of backbone and feels good in the handle when fighting the little brutes and lifting line off the water, but it also is a joy to cast the heavier flys. It makes me look like I know what I am doing when I can shoot out a long cast with a #4 Boogle Bug on the end. Keep the great line of gear coming. I am an Allen Fly Fishing fan.

  7. Great Rod, love the action

Posted by DeWitt Bebout on 26th Jun 2012

Allen Xa 4 wt. 8'6", just got this rod a couple weeks ago and have used it a number of times. I couldn't be more pleased, it casts great matched with the Allen Trout1 set up for 4 wt.. and I can cast it with mutch less effort than my 6 wt. set up that I started with. I really like the rod the only reason I gave it four stars is the reel seat lockdown looks kind of cheap to me, it has worked fine it's just the looks of it that I don't care for. I would still recommend this rod.

  8. Price doesn't reflect the quality!

Posted by Ruben on 24th Jun 2012

Received my 10’ 5wt Xa at the end of last week and all I can say after having fished with it a couple of times is; Allen did their homework with this blank. This rod can do it all! Excellent nymphing stick with lightness, reach and sensitivity. Roll casting was effortless, overhead casts were crisp and accurate. Even though it is a 10’ rod it handled like a shorter one in its feel, yet the long reach kept back casts nice and high over brush and tall grasses and made easy work of mending line. Casting weighted flies and small streamers was very easy due to its reserve power down the blank; no problem with indi rigs either. I cast both the recommended line weight and stepped up to a 6wt floating wf line and it didn’t feel stressed at all to any fishable casting distance with the extra grain weight (due to good reserve power). Good looks, well built and a crisp feel, you hit a home run with this one guys. Highly recommended!

  9. Slick looking

Posted by Glen B on 19th Jun 2012

Rod looks so nice feels great like the different types of cork on the handle and wood reel seat, the lock down is very nice also. Will be taking it out next week to shake it down. In the sierras with one of your trout reel in red the combo looks like it should cost many hundreds more. Only cast in the front yard it cast sweet, but next week will tell the story. I've fished for a long time and fish hard from the sierras to Alaska unguided float trips for weeks were the tackle has to hold up. If it fishes like it looks I'll be back for more. maybe speyed or switch rod nexted.

  10. XA 9' 4WT

    Posted by Stimulator2 on 18th Jun 2012

This is an excellent rod for the money it cast like the high end rods, and presents dryflies or even heavier nymph rigs with easy .i would recommend this rod to anyone who wanted a nice ,high quality rod on a budget. You would not go wrong with this rod.
